We’re tired of VPN review sites that sound like marketing brochures. VPNSpin exists to cut through the BS and give you honest, tested recommendations.
Who Is Marius?
Hi, I’m Marius. I’m a cynical, coffee-fueled cybersecurity researcher based in Bucharest, Romania.
Why should you listen to me? Because I don’t trust anyone. Not the VPN companies, not the ISPs, and certainly not the government.
I’ve spent the last 10 years breaking things. I test VPNs by actually traveling to high-censorship countries like the UAE and China (and yes, I’ve had my burner phone confiscated). I test antivirus software by intentionally infecting my own virtual machines with ransomware.
What you should know about Marius:
- Based in Bucharest, Romania (with frequent testing from London, Dubai, and New York)
- Skeptical of marketing claims—everything gets tested
- No corporate affiliations beyond standard affiliate programs (see Affiliate Disclosure)
- First-person reviews reflect actual testing experience, not theoretical specs
Our Testing Methodology
Unlike most VPN review sites, we don’t test everything. That would be impossible and dishonest.
What we actually do:
- Speed Tests: Real tests from London, Bucharest, Dubai, and NYC using Ookla Speedtest and Fast.com
- Leak Tests: DNS, IP, and WebRTC leak detection using BrowserLeaks and DNSLeakTest.com
- Streaming Tests: Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max from specific regions
- App Testing: Hands-on testing of Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android apps
- Support Testing: Live chat response times and quality checks
What we DON’T do:
- Test every server location (we focus on 2-3 key regions per review)
- Verify every privacy policy claim legally (we acknowledge when we can’t verify something)
- Test features we don’t personally use (we’ll say “I didn’t test this”)
Why VPNSpin Exists
In 2016, I got fed up with VPN review sites that ranked every product 9/10 and regurgitated marketing copy.
Most “reviews” were:
- Never actually tested (“Based on our research…” = copied from spec sheets)
- Overly positive (affiliate commissions create conflicts)
- Outdated (pricing and features change constantly)
VPNSpin is different. We make money through affiliate links, but we’re transparent about it. If a VPN sucks, we’ll say so—even if it means losing a sale.
